The software in detail
Our software intakes your existing assets in the form of an SVG file. The file that you upload should be in the light mode version (designed for viewing on a light background). Equivalent SVG will assist you in creating a version of the graphic for dark mode.
Note: this requires the website you are developing to have a dark theme installed beforehand, as your new Smart SVG™ files will respond at the OS level to the user's light or dark mode preference. However, if you do not already have or plan to have a dark theme on the website you are building, please make sure to select “No inversion” to keep your artwork from changing when the user has that preference setting selected on their device.
You can lock your original colors so they do not change when displayed in dark mode or customize each of the dark mode colors as you see fit. We recommend making sure there is sufficient color contrast against the edge of your graphic and the background of your website. You may also customize the background display color within the tool to accurately predict what your graphic will look like in both your light and dark mode themes. The background color is just a preview and will not export with your Smart SVG™ file.
Our tool also prompts you to add “Alt Text” or to declare that the image is simply decorative to make the image accessible for assistive technologies such as screen readers. Alternative text should be descriptive for a low vision user to understand the context of why it's been added to your application or website. If your image is purely decorative, it does not require alt text. If you need additional help deciding how to use an alt text, please refer to the W3C’s alt decision tree.
We will look forward to hearing your feedback on how we might improve our tool and add advanced features. Please reach out anytime with questions or if you need tech support. We offer detailed installation instructions with some cautions on our disclaimer making sure your website will accommodate these intelligent and responsive graphics.
We have also created The Learning Center, which has many resources for you to learn more about our Smart SVG™ Technologies.
Thank you for helping us make the world a more inclusive place!
